Found in the eastern Himalayas and adjoining areas, including Nepal, Bhutan, northeastern India, northern Myanmar, and parts of southwestern China. It inhabits dense undergrowth in moist broadleaf forests at mid-elevations.

Listen for its loud, resonant, and often chattering calls, which are a good indicator of its presence. Look for groups foraging on the forest floor or in low vegetation. Note the rufous neck contrasting with the darker head.
