Spotted
A striking antpitta known for its rufous crown and contrasting white throat, found in humid montane forests. Like many of its relatives, it is more often heard than seen as it forages on the forest floor.
Where to spot
Restricted to the eastern slopes of the Andes in southern Ecuador and northern Peru, inhabiting humid montane forests and cloud forests, often with abundant moss and epiphyte growth.
How to spot
Focus on its loud, far-carrying hooting calls. To glimpse this shy bird, find a quiet spot near a known calling territory in dense forest and wait patiently, scanning the forest floor. Local guides can be invaluable.
When to spot
Most active and vocal at dawn and dusk. Observation is possible year-round in its specific Andean habitat.
Despite its relatively bright head markings, it is adept at remaining hidden in the dense undergrowth, making its discovery a rewarding challenge for birders.
