Spotted
The Rufous-breasted Sabrewing is a vibrant hummingbird species characterized by its distinct rufous (reddish-brown) underparts, which contrast sharply with its green upperparts. It is a territorial bird of the northern Venezuelan mountains.
Where to spot
Endemic to the coastal mountain ranges of northern Venezuela, including the Cordillera de la Costa, where it inhabits humid montane forests and cloud forests.
How to spot
Search for it feeding at flowering plants in humid montane and cloud forests. Its prominent rufous breast and belly are excellent field marks. Males often perch conspicuously while defending their feeding territories.
When to spot
Resident throughout the year in its relatively restricted habitat. Optimal observation times are typically early morning and late afternoon.
