The Ruddy Quail-Dove is a widespread and relatively common ground-dove across the Neotropics. Males are strikingly ruddy, while females exhibit more subdued brownish tones, showcasing clear sexual dimorphism.
Where to spot
Found in tropical and subtropical forests, woodlands, coffee plantations, and dense second growth across Central and South America, and parts of the Caribbean.
How to spot
Look for it foraging on the forest floor, where it often moves with a distinctive bobbing gait while flicking leaves. Listen for its mournful, repetitive, three-note cooing call, 'coo-coo-cooo', which can be easily recognized even from a distance.
When to spot
Year-round. Most active and vocal during the early morning and late afternoon, often heard calling during the breeding season.
