Spotted
The Royal Sunangel is a highly distinctive and rare hummingbird, known for its deep blue to purplish-blue body plumage, a color unusual among sunangels, and a sparkling emerald gorget. It is a species of great conservation concern.
Where to spot
Very specific, isolated cloud forest patches on the eastern slopes of the Andes in northern Peru, typically at elevations between 1,450 and 2,900 meters.
How to spot
This bird is incredibly difficult to find due to its rarity and restricted range. Focus efforts on known sites within its small Peruvian range. Quietly search dense cloud forest understory for flowering plants it may visit.
When to spot
Year-round, but finding it requires dedicated effort in its limited habitat. Best observed during periods of flowering abundance in its specific range.
This species is critically endangered and has a very restricted range in isolated cloud forest patches, making it a high priority for global conservation efforts. Its striking blue coloration makes it unmistakable.
