Spotted
The Rosy Starling is a beautiful and unmistakable starling, characterized by its vibrant pink body, black head, wings, and tail with an iridescent sheen. It's often associated with open, dry habitats.
Where to spot
Breeds primarily in Central Asia and Eastern Europe, with some populations extending into parts of the Middle East. It undertakes long migrations to winter in India and parts of Africa.
How to spot
Look for flocks foraging in open agricultural areas, steppe, or grasslands, often near livestock. Its vibrant pink and black plumage makes it stand out, and its calls are typical starling-like chatters and whistles.
When to spot
Best observed during the late spring and summer months in its breeding range, or during autumn and winter in its wintering grounds. Irregular appearances can occur widely during migration.

Rosy Starlings are highly nomadic and their breeding range can shift dramatically year to year, largely influenced by outbreaks of locusts, which form a significant part of their diet.
