The Rio de Janeiro Antwren is a critically endangered and extremely localized species of antwren, known only from a very small area within the Atlantic Forest. It is a small, shy bird of the forest undergrowth.
Where to spot
Extremely restricted range in the Atlantic Forest of Rio de Janeiro state, southeastern Brazil.
How to spot
Requires immense patience and local expert guidance within its specific, very limited habitat. Listen for its unique vocalizations, as visual encounters are exceptionally difficult.
When to spot
Year-round resident, but observations are rare. Best sought during early morning.
This species is one of the most enigmatic and rarest antwrens, having been described relatively recently from only a handful of specimens and observations, highlighting its precarious conservation status.
