The Rennell Shrikebill is a unique passerine endemic to Rennell Island in the Solomon Islands. Unlike typical white-eyes, it has a robust, shrike-like bill, reflecting its different foraging habits.
Where to spot
Found exclusively on Rennell Island, Solomon Islands, inhabiting lowland forest and forest edges.
How to spot
Look for a small to medium-sized bird with a noticeably strong, hooked bill. Despite its name, it lacks the prominent white eye-ring of true white-eyes. Listen for its distinctive calls, different from typical white-eyes.
When to spot
Active year-round, with peak foraging in the mornings and late afternoons.
This species was formerly placed in the white-eye family (Zosteropidae) but is now recognized as distinct, showcasing its unique evolutionary path on Rennell.
