Spotted
The Red-rumped Tinkerbird is a small, brightly colored African barbet, primarily green with yellow streaks, but most notably featuring a prominent red patch on its rump.
Where to spot
Humid lowland and montane forests, forest edges, and mature secondary growth in West and Central Africa, from Sierra Leone to Uganda and Angola.
How to spot
Listen for its characteristic 'pop-pop-pop' call. Look for quick movements in the mid to upper canopy, and specifically try to catch a glimpse of the red rump patch as it flies or shifts position.
When to spot
Year-round; most active and vocal during the morning hours.
The red rump of this tinkerbird is often the first thing that catches a birder's eye as it flits between branches or flies away.
