The African Pygmy Falcon is the smallest raptor in Africa, known for its tiny size and unique habit of nesting in the abandoned nests of social weavers.
Where to spot
Semi-arid bushveld, thorn scrub, and dry savannas in eastern and southern Africa, from Sudan south to South Africa.
How to spot
Look for its very small size, grey back (male) or rufous back (female), white underparts, and dark mask. Often seen perched on exposed branches or near large weaver nests. Its call is a high-pitched 'ki-ki-ki.'
When to spot
Active during the day. Best observed perched conspicuously on acacia trees or near weaver nests. Observable year-round.
