Spotted
The White-chinned Myzomela is a small, dark honeyeater found in the Solomon Islands. It is characterized by its dull plumage, with a subtle whitish chin that gives it its common name.
Where to spot
Endemic to the Solomon Islands, specifically found on Bougainville, Choisuel, Santa Isabel, Malaita, and Guadalcanal. It inhabits lowland and montane forests, as well as forest edges and secondary growth.
How to spot
Look for its dark, dusky plumage, often appearing blackish, with a distinguishing pale or whitish chin. It is a small, active bird that can be difficult to observe clearly in dense foliage. Listen for its high-pitched, squeaky calls.
When to spot
Active during daylight hours, foraging for nectar, insects, and small fruits. It is a resident species, observable year-round within its island habitats.
Despite its somewhat drab appearance, this myzomela plays a crucial role in its ecosystem as a pollinator, feeding on nectar from a variety of flowering plants.
