Spotted
The Painted Bunting is often called the "most beautiful bird in North America," with males boasting an incredible palette of blue, green, and red plumage. Females are a striking bright green.
Where to spot
Breeds in two distinct populations: southeastern US (coastal scrub, maritime forests) and south-central US (riparian woodlands, thorny thickets). Winters from Florida and southern Texas south through Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean.
How to spot
Look in dense, shrubby habitats, coastal thickets, and riparian woodlands. They are often shy, but males will sing from somewhat exposed perches. Can be attracted to feeders with small seeds. Listen for their short, bright, jumbled song.
When to spot
Best seen during spring and fall migration (April-May, September-October) in various shrubby habitats. During breeding season (June-July), they are in their specific shrub-dense areas. Winter residents are present from October to April in their southern range.

Despite their vibrant colors, Painted Buntings can be surprisingly elusive, often hiding in dense brush, making a sighting a truly special event for birdwatchers.
