The Purplish-backed Jacamar is a strikingly colored jacamar with iridescent green plumage that transitions to a purplish or coppery bronze on its back and wings, and a rufous belly.
Where to spot
Humid lowland rainforests and forest edges in the western Amazon basin of southeastern Colombia, eastern Ecuador, and northeastern Peru.
How to spot
Scan the understory and mid-story for perched birds. Look for the iridescent purple/copper sheen on the back, especially when it turns slightly. Listen for its high-pitched, clear calls.

The subtle purplish sheen on its back can be difficult to observe without good lighting, often appearing simply dark green or brownish in the shadows of the forest.
