Spotted
The Pale-headed Jacamar is a distinctive jacamar with a relatively small body and a long, straight bill. It is characterized by its iridescent dark upperparts and a paler, often buffy or whitish, head.
Where to spot
Humid lowland forests, particularly along forest edges and clearings, in a restricted range in northeastern Colombia and northwestern Venezuela.
How to spot
Look for it perched on exposed branches at the edge of the forest or near clearings. Its pale head contrasting with its dark body is a key field mark. Listen for its high-pitched calls.
When to spot
Year-round, with increased activity during the early morning and late afternoon.

Like other short-tailed jacamars, the Pale-headed Jacamar specializes in catching small to medium-sized flying insects, which it then dismembers by beating them against a branch before consumption.
