Spotted
A distinctive hummingbird known for its long bill and, in males, a brilliant red throat, contrasting with a relatively plain, dark cap. Its appearance is unique among starthroats.
Where to spot
Dry forests, scrubland, and forest edges along the Pacific slope of Central America, from northwestern Mexico to northwestern Costa Rica.
How to spot
Look for its long, straight bill and, in males, the bright red gorget combined with a dark, non-iridescent cap. Its habitat preference for drier areas is also a clue.
When to spot
Active during daylight hours, often visiting flowers and feeders in its preferred habitat, especially during the dry season when flowers are scarcer.

Unlike some other hummingbirds, the 'plain cap' is a key identifier, as its crown lacks the extensive iridescence seen in many other species, making it easier to distinguish.
