Spotted
The Loja Thrush (*Turdus reevei*) is a distinctive thrush species found in the arid and semi-arid inter-Andean valleys of southwestern Ecuador and northwestern Peru. Its plumage is a warm brown, with a paler belly.
Where to spot
Typically found in dry deciduous and semi-deciduous forests, scrublands, and agricultural areas in the inter-Andean valleys of Ecuador (Loja province) and adjacent Peru.
How to spot
Look for it foraging on the ground or in low shrubs. Its relatively uniform warm brown coloration can make it blend in. Listening for its varied song or sharp calls is often the best way to locate it in its dense habitat.
When to spot
Resident throughout its range year-round. It is most active and vocal during the breeding season, which often coincides with periods of increased rainfall.
This thrush species is adapted to drier environments than many of its congeners, often foraging in rocky, scrubby areas where other thrushes are less common.
