The Black Lark is a distinctive species with largely black plumage, found in open steppes and semi-deserts of Central Asia. Males are particularly dark.
Where to spot
Open steppes, semi-deserts, and dry grasslands across parts of Central Asia and southeastern Russia.
How to spot
Scan open ground. Males are easy to spot. Listen for its rich, melodious song, often delivered in a high song flight.
When to spot
Seasonal migrant. Best observed during the breeding season (spring/summer) when males are in their striking black plumage and actively singing.
During the breeding season, the male Black Lark becomes almost entirely glossy black, making it highly conspicuous against the pale steppe landscape.
