Spotted
The Pitta-like Ground Roller is a striking and elusive species, resembling a pitta with its colorful plumage and terrestrial habits. It is endemic to the humid rainforests of Madagascar.
Where to spot
Endemic to eastern Madagascar. It inhabits humid primary and mature secondary rainforests, primarily on the forest floor, often near streams, at mid to high elevations.
How to spot
Extremely difficult to observe due to its secretive nature and cryptic movements. Requires patience and quiet movement. Listen for its distinctive, far-carrying calls, which are the main way to detect its presence.
When to spot
Most active at dawn and dusk, when it forages on the forest floor. It is a resident species, observable year-round.

Like pittas, this ground roller uses its strong legs to hop and rummage through leaf litter on the forest floor, relying on its vibrant plumage to flash during display or as a 'startle' defense.
