Spotted
The Long-tailed Ground Roller is a spectacular and highly sought-after species, known for its remarkably long tail, intricate plumage patterns, and terrestrial habits. It is endemic to Madagascar's arid spiny forests.
Where to spot
Endemic to southwestern Madagascar. It strictly inhabits the unique dry spiny forest and adjacent thorny thickets, a highly specialized and threatened habitat.
How to spot
Requires dedicated searching in its specific, often difficult, spiny forest habitat. Look for its long tail as it runs or hops on the ground. Its loud, distinctive calls, especially in the early morning, are the best way to find it.
When to spot
Most active at dawn and dusk, when it forages on the forest floor. It is a resident species, observable year-round.

Its exceptionally long tail feathers, which can be twice the length of its body, are thought to play a role in courtship displays or camouflage by mimicking fallen twigs.
