Spotted
This hybrid combines the medium-sized Pink-footed Goose (Anser brachyrhynchus), common in parts of Europe, with the familiar Canada Goose (Branta canadensis). It exhibits a blend of their respective plumage and structural characteristics.
Where to spot
Most likely encountered in Europe, particularly in areas where vagrant Canada Geese or escaped individuals might encounter Pink-footed Geese in their wintering grounds, or in parks with mixed waterfowl collections.
How to spot
Look for a bird with the overall build of a Canada Goose but with lighter, grayer body plumage. The head and neck might be black with a white chinstrap, but the bill and legs may show a pinkish hue, unlike the black bill and legs of a pure Canada Goose.
When to spot
During autumn and winter in Europe when Pink-footed Geese are present, or year-round in areas with resident mixed goose populations.
Pink-footed Geese are known for their characteristic 'pink' bills and feet, which may be partially or subtly expressed in a hybrid with a Canada Goose, making it a key identification clue.
