Spotted
This hybrid combines the large, grey-bodied Greylag Goose (Anser anser) with the smaller, boldly marked Barnacle Goose (Branta leucopsis), leading to an interesting blend of size and pattern.
Where to spot
Commonly found in parks, wetlands, and agricultural areas across Europe, especially where both species co-exist or feral populations are established.
How to spot
Identify by its intermediate size – larger than a pure Barnacle but smaller than a typical Greylag. Plumage will be a mix of grey on the body (from Greylag) with the black neck and white face characteristic of the Barnacle Goose. The bill color can vary.
When to spot
Can be observed year-round in areas with resident populations. During migration (autumn/spring) when wild populations are on the move, observation opportunities may increase.

The Greylag Goose is the ancestor of most domestic geese, and its hybrid offspring may occasionally show traits reminiscent of domesticated forms.
