Spotted
The Peruvian Diving Petrel is a small, stocky seabird endemic to the Humboldt Current region of South America. It is an exceptional underwater swimmer, using its wings for propulsion.
Where to spot
Found along the Pacific coast of Peru and Chile, breeding on offshore islands. Its range is closely tied to the cold, productive waters of the Humboldt Current.
How to spot
Look for its small, compact body, short neck, and rapid wing beats during flight. Often seen close to shore, diving frequently. Its dark upperparts and white underparts are characteristic. Best observed from coastal vantage points or small boats.
When to spot
Can be observed year-round in its coastal range, though often more concentrated near breeding colonies during their nesting season (variable by location, but often October-March).

Unlike most other petrels, diving petrels are highly adapted to diving, using their wings to 'fly' underwater in pursuit of prey, much like a penguin.
