Spotted
The Pale-footed Swallow is a high-altitude swallow found in the Andes of South America. It is a dusky brown bird with distinctive pale yellowish feet.
Where to spot
Montane and high-Andean grasslands, paramo, and open areas near treeline in the Andes from Venezuela to Peru.
How to spot
Look for its overall dusky brown plumage and observe its flight high over mountainous terrain. The pale feet are difficult to see unless the bird is perching very close. Its habitat and elevation are often key identifiers.
When to spot
Year-round resident in its high-altitude range. Active during daylight hours.
Its species name 'flavipes' directly translates to 'yellow foot,' highlighting a key, though often hard to observe, identification feature only visible in very close views.
