The White-eyed River Martin is a critically endangered, possibly extinct, species of hirundine known only from its wintering grounds in Thailand. It is characterized by its iridescent blue-black plumage and distinctive white eyes.
Where to spot
Historically known from freshwater marshes and lakes with extensive reedbeds in central Thailand during winter. Its breeding grounds remain unknown.
How to spot
If it were to be rediscovered, look for its distinctive white eyes and iridescent blue-black plumage while foraging over wetlands or perching on reeds. Any potential sighting should be immediately reported and documented.
When to spot
Historically, winter months (November-February) in Thailand. Due to its extreme rarity and possible extinction, observation is not currently considered possible.
This bird is so rare and mysterious that it has only ever been observed a handful of times, with no confirmed sightings since 1980, making it one of the world's most enigmatic birds.
