Spotted
The Ornate Antwren is a small, visually striking antwren, particularly the male with its contrasting plumage. It inhabits the lower and mid-story of humid tropical forests.
Where to spot
Humid forests of the Andes foothills in Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, and northern Peru.
How to spot
Search in the understory and mid-story of humid forests, often in ravine areas or near streams. It typically joins mixed-species flocks, so observe those carefully and listen for its calls.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Early mornings and late afternoons are the best times for observation when it is most active.

Unlike many of its drab relatives, the male Ornate Antwren displays distinctive patterning, including a black throat with fine white streaking, making it one of the more 'ornate' members of its genus.
