The Oriental Hobby is a small, agile falcon distributed across Southeast Asia and parts of the Indian subcontinent, known for its swift flight and crepuscular hunting of aerial prey.
Where to spot
Forests, woodlands, and open areas with scattered trees from the Himalayas east to China and Southeast Asia, south to Indonesia and the Philippines.
How to spot
Look for its small size, dark slate-grey upperparts, and distinct rufous-red belly and thighs. Its flight is fast and direct. It often perches on exposed branches.
When to spot
Active during the day, often more visible at dawn and dusk. Breeding season varies by region.
