Rocky hills, cliffs, inselbergs, and arid savannas across a wide band of sub-Saharan Africa, from Senegal to Ethiopia and south to Tanzania.

Look for its uniformly deep rufous-orange plumage, dark flight feathers, and long tail. It typically perches conspicuously on rocky outcrops or high trees and rarely hovers.
When to spot
Active during the day, particularly in the morning and late afternoon. Observable year-round.
