The Cape Longclaw is a common and conspicuous longclaw species endemic to southern Africa. Males display a striking yellow and black throat, making them easily identifiable.
Where to spot
Southern Africa, including South Africa, Lesotho, and Eswatini. Found in open grasslands, cultivated fields, and savannas.
How to spot
Look for its bright yellow throat and black chest band (males) and its long hind claw. Often perches on elevated spots to sing. Its loud, distinctive calls and song are often the first sign of its presence.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Active throughout the day, often seen perching conspicuously on mounds or fence posts.
