Spotted
The Amazonian Oropendola is a massive and impressive icterid, primarily glossy black with a chestnut rump, a pale yellowish bill, and bright yellow outer tail feathers. It's the largest of the oropendolas.
Where to spot
Found across the Amazon basin in South America, including Brazil, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, and the Guianas. Inhabits humid lowland rainforests, forest edges, and gallery forests.
How to spot
Scan the canopy of tall trees for this very large, dark bird with a pale bill and yellow tail. Its immense size and deep, resonant calls are key indicators. Look for its huge, pendulous nests.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Most active and vocal during the breeding season (which varies seasonally but typically during rainy periods) when large nesting colonies are formed.

As the largest oropendola species, its vocalizations are notably deep and resonant, often described as a 'gurgling' or 'spluttering' sound that carries far through the forest.
