Where to spot
Found in eastern and southeastern Africa, from Eritrea south to South Africa, and also on Madagascar. Inhabits open woodlands, savannas, cultivated land, and coastal areas.
How to spot
Look for it perched conspicuously on high branches or wires. Its large size and bold colors make it stand out. Watch for its swift, undulating flight as it pursues large insects, and listen for its distinctive 'krreep' call.
When to spot
Resident year-round in most of its range, though some populations show local movements. Most active during the day, particularly during peak insect activity.
