Where to spot
Breeds across southern Europe, North Africa, and western Asia, migrating to sub-Saharan Africa and parts of India for winter. Found in open country, grasslands, river valleys, and areas with sandy banks for nesting.
How to spot
Listen for their distinctive, liquid 'prruup' calls, which are often the first sign of their presence. Look for them perching on wires or prominent branches, or catching insects in graceful, undulating flight.
When to spot
Most visible during the breeding season (late spring to summer) when they are active around their nesting colonies. Also present during migration (spring and autumn) in many regions.
