The Olive-backed Sunbird is one of the most common and widespread sunbirds across Asia and Australasia. Males have an olive-green back, iridescent blue-black throat, and a bright yellow belly.
Where to spot
Widespread from South Asia to Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Philippines, and northern Australia. Inhabits forests, woodlands, mangroves, gardens, and urban areas.
How to spot
Look for its olive back and yellow belly, with the male's iridescent blue-black throat patch. Its cheerful, high-pitched calls and rapid movements are common. It often hangs upside down to feed.
When to spot
Active throughout the year. Most visible during morning and late afternoon. Easily observed at flowering plants and nectar feeders.
This highly adaptable species is a 'super-generalist', thriving in a vast array of habitats from dense forests to bustling urban centers, making it one of the most frequently encountered sunbirds.
