Spotted
The Ochraceous Wren is a small, drab wren of humid montane forests, best identified by its pale, ochre-colored underparts. It is a shy, active bird of dense undergrowth.
Where to spot
Found in humid montane forests, cloud forests, and bamboo thickets at high elevations, from southern Mexico south through Central America to Panama.
How to spot
Listen for its distinctive, often high-pitched song emanating from dense undergrowth. Spotting it requires patience as it tends to stay hidden, but its pale belly can sometimes be seen through foliage.
When to spot
A year-round resident. Most active and vocal during the early morning hours, especially during the breeding season.

Its 'ochraceus' specific epithet refers to the yellowish-brown or 'ochre' color of its belly, a key feature in identification.
