Spotted
The Spot-breasted Wren is a medium-sized wren distinguished by its subtly spotted breast and warm rufous plumage. It is an active inhabitant of humid tropical forests.
Where to spot
Inhabits humid lowland and foothill forests, forest edges, and mature secondary growth, from southern Mexico south through Central America to northern Colombia.
How to spot
Listen for its loud, clear, and often musical song. Look for a medium-sized wren foraging in dense undergrowth or low trees. Patience is needed to spot the subtle breast spotting.
When to spot
A year-round resident. Most active and vocal during the early morning and late afternoon.
While often skulking, careful observation can reveal the fine spotting on its breast, which lends it its common name.
