How to spot

Look for their large size, clean white body, and striking black wingtips. Watch for their powerful, direct flight and their characteristic dramatic plunge-dives from high above the water as they hunt fish. Binoculars are essential for distant sightings.

Northern Gannets are incredible divers, able to hit the water at speeds up to 60 mph (100 km/h) from heights of 100 feet (30 meters) or more, equipped with air sacs in their faces to cushion the impact.
