Spotted
The Night Parrot is an exceptionally rare and enigmatic ground-dwelling parrot endemic to the arid interior of Australia. Known for its nocturnal habits and cryptic plumage, it was long thought extinct until recent sightings.
Where to spot
Extremely rare and elusive. Found in dense, spinifex grasslands in arid and semi-arid regions of inland Australia. Sightings are extremely infrequent.
How to spot
Observing this bird is incredibly difficult due to its rarity and nocturnal nature. Sightings usually occur when it is accidentally flushed from dense spinifex. Listening for its distinctive 'ding-ding' call at night is often the only sign.
When to spot
Nocturnal. Active after dusk and before dawn. Day sightings are almost unheard of unless flushed.
The Night Parrot is one of only two nocturnal parrot species in the world, a rare adaptation for avoiding daytime predators and exploiting cooler night temperatures in its hot, arid habitat.
