Spotted
Edwards's Fig Parrot is a vibrant, small parrot species endemic to northern New Guinea. Males have a bright green body with a yellow throat, red cheeks, and a blue crown, making them particularly striking.
Where to spot
Endemic to the northern lowland rainforests of New Guinea, particularly in the Sepik-Ramu and Ramu-Markham river basins.
How to spot
Look for its small size and, in males, the bright combination of green, yellow throat, and red cheeks. Females are duller. Listen for its high-pitched, rapid chattering calls.
When to spot
Active during daylight hours, often seen in pairs or small groups quietly foraging in fruiting trees. Most visible in early morning and late afternoon.
This species is an important seed disperser for various rainforest trees, as it primarily feeds on the fruits of many different plant species, especially figs.
