Spotted
The New Guinea Flightless Rail (Megacrex inepta) is a large, flightless rail endemic to the island of New Guinea. Its cryptic plumage and secretive nature make it one of the least-known rails in the world, often only identified by its distinct calls.
Where to spot
Restricted to lowland rainforests and swamps of New Guinea, primarily in the northern parts. Prefers dense, wet forest undergrowth.
How to spot
Observing this rail is very challenging due to its secretive nature and dense habitat. Focus on listening for its distinctive calls within dense rainforests and be prepared for long, patient waits in quiet areas.
When to spot
Year-round, but direct visual sightings are extremely rare. Best detected by its unique, booming calls, especially at dawn or dusk.

This species is so elusive that it was known only from a few specimens for many decades, leading to speculation about its flightlessness before its behavior could be directly observed in the wild.
