Spotted
A medium-sized, secretive bittern endemic to New Guinea, characterized by its dark, finely streaked plumage that provides excellent camouflage in dense wetlands.
Where to spot
Dense freshwater marshes, reedbeds, and swamps in New Guinea and potentially some nearby islands.
How to spot
Requires considerable patience. Look for its dark, streaky plumage. Best chance is often to scan dense reedbeds from a distance or listen for any calls.
When to spot
Year-round. Best observed quietly at dawn or dusk. Sightings are generally rare.
This species is relatively poorly known compared to other bitterns, largely due to its elusive nature and the remote, dense habitats it occupies.
