Spotted
Formerly considered a subspecies of the Siberian Stonechat, Stejneger's Stonechat is a distinct migratory species found in East Asia. It shares the characteristic upright posture and 'stone-tapping' call.
Where to spot
Breeds in Eastern Asia, including parts of Siberia, Mongolia, China, Korea, and Japan. Winters in Southeast Asia and Southern China. Found in open country with scattered bushes.
How to spot
Like other stonechats, look for it perching conspicuously on low bushes or tall weeds. Distinguishing it from other stonechat species requires careful attention to subtle plumage details, especially the extent of white on the rump and belly.
When to spot
Best observed during its breeding season from May to July, and during its spring (April-May) and autumn (September-November) migration periods.

This species is a classic example of how genetic studies can reveal cryptic species that were previously thought to be one, highlighting the complexity of avian taxonomy.
