Found in various isolated montane regions across Southeast Asia, including parts of Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, and southern China. It prefers dense, humid broadleaf evergreen forests at mid to high elevations.
How to spot
Locate it by its distinctive, ringing, and often melancholic calls, which are relatively loud for its size. Look for a dark, secretive bird moving low in dense vegetation or on the forest floor.
