Spotted
This small, sturdy parakeet inhabits the high-altitude regions of the Andes, characterized by its green body and varying amounts of yellow on its face and forehead. It tolerates cold, harsh environments.
Where to spot
High Andes of Peru, Bolivia, Chile, and Argentina, typically found in rocky, semi-arid slopes with scattered shrubs and cacti, or open woodlands.
How to spot
Listen for their distinctive high-pitched, somewhat nasal calls, especially when they are flying in flocks. Look for them perching on power lines, rocks, or large cacti in open areas.
When to spot
Can be observed throughout the day, often in small to large flocks. They are present year-round.
