Spotted
A distinctive small bird, male Mistletoebirds are glossy blue-black above with a bright red throat, chest, and undertail coverts, while females are duller. It's famous for its strong association with mistletoe plants.
Where to spot
Widespread across Australia and some nearby islands, inhabiting a variety of wooded habitats including forests, woodlands, and gardens.
How to spot
Look for it in trees where mistletoe is growing. Its distinctive plumage, especially the red patches on males, makes it easy to spot. Listen for its high-pitched, often repeated 'sweet-sweet' calls.
When to spot
Active year-round in its resident range, with increased visibility during the breeding season. Best observed during morning and late afternoon.

The Mistletoebird has a specialized digestive system that allows it to eat mistletoe berries and pass the seeds quickly and intact, often depositing them directly onto tree branches, thus playing a critical role in mistletoe dispersal.
