Spotted
The Southern Black Flycatcher (*Melaenornis pammelaina*) is a widespread African flycatcher, virtually entirely glossy black in plumage, with a slender build. It is very similar to its northern counterpart.
Where to spot
Widespread across southern Africa, inhabiting open woodlands, savannas, and forest edges, from Angola and Zambia south to South Africa.
How to spot
Look for its uniform glossy black plumage and upright posture. It often perches conspicuously on dead branches or wires. Listen for its varied, often musical and chattering song.
When to spot
Resident throughout much of its range, active year-round. It is often observed throughout the day, sallying from prominent perches to catch insects.
Its name 'pammelaina' is Greek for 'all black', accurately describing its entirely dark coloration.
