Spotted
The Blue-headed Redstart is a charming, small bird, with males displaying a lovely blue-grey head and upperparts, contrasting with warm rufous underparts. Females are duller, often olive-brown.
Where to spot
Found in the Himalayas and surrounding regions of South Asia, inhabiting temperate and subtropical montane forests, often in the understory and along forest edges.
How to spot
Search in the dense undergrowth, lower branches, and along forest trails in montane forests. Look for its characteristic tail-flicking behavior. Its simple, melodic song can help in detection.
When to spot
Year-round resident, though some altitudinal movements occur seasonally. Most vocal and active during the breeding season from spring to early summer.
Despite its somewhat localized distribution, it is generally common within its preferred habitat and can often be seen actively foraging in the lower canopy and undergrowth.
