The Marquesas Monarch is an endangered species of monarch flycatcher endemic to the island of Hiva Oa in the Marquesas. It is a small, dark bird facing threats from introduced species.
Where to spot
Endemic to Hiva Oa and Ua Pou islands in the Marquesas, French Polynesia, found in remaining native forests.
How to spot
Focus on dense native forest, especially in valleys and at higher elevations. Listen for its calls and observe patiently as it forages in the mid-story.
When to spot
Year-round resident, but rare. Best observed with targeted effort in known habitats.
This species is also known locally as the 'Ua Pou Monarch', reflecting its presence on another Marquesan island where it is also critically endangered.
