Coastal mangroves, estuaries, lagoons, and slow-moving rivers with overhanging vegetation throughout Central America and northern South America.
How to spot
Look for its iridescent blue-green back, white underparts, and the thin white line just above the eye (superciliary line). Observe its graceful flight, often flying low over water.

Year-round resident. Active during daylight hours, foraging over water.
