Spotted
This hybrid results from the cross-breeding of two widespread dabbling ducks, the Mallard and the Northern Pintail. Individuals exhibit a variable mix of plumage and structural characteristics, often making them a puzzle for birdwatchers. They are one of the more commonly reported duck hybrids due to the extensive overlap in parent ranges.
Where to spot
Found globally in areas where both Mallards and Northern Pintails occur, which includes vast expanses of North America, Eurasia, and other temperate regions. Look in a wide variety of wetland habitats, including parks, ponds, rivers, and coastal marshes.
How to spot
Look for a duck that doesn't quite fit the mold of either parent. Key features to check include head shape and color, bill pattern, length of neck and tail, and speculum coloration, all of which might show intermediate traits. Observe its size relative to pure Mallards and Pintails.
When to spot
Can be observed year-round in areas where both parent species are resident, but encounters are more common during migration and winter when populations are concentrated.
Mallards are particularly prone to hybridizing with other duck species, sometimes leading to fertile offspring, which can make identification even more complex across multiple generations of interbreeding.
