Spotted
The Dark-bellied Brent Goose (Branta bernicla bernicla) is a small, dark goose with a distinctive black head and neck, a white neck patch, and a grey-brown body. It is one of the most marine-adapted goose species.
Where to spot
Primarily found on coastal mudflats, estuaries, salt marshes, and increasingly in inland grasslands and agricultural fields during winter. Its breeding grounds are in Arctic Siberia.
How to spot
Look for their small size and dark coloration, especially the contrast between the dark upperparts and the slightly paler, but still dark, belly. The small white neck patch is a key identifying feature. They often feed on marine algae or grasses.
When to spot
Most easily observed during the autumn and winter months (October-April) when they gather in large flocks along coastal areas. Breeding season is brief during the Arctic summer (June-July).
