Spotted
The Northern Spur-winged Goose (*Plectropterus gambensis gambensis*) is the nominate subspecies of the Spur-winged Goose, distinguished by its range and subtle plumage variations from its southern counterpart. It is a large and distinctive waterfowl.
Where to spot
Found across West and Central Africa, primarily north of the equator. It inhabits a variety of wetland environments, including rivers, lakes, swamps, and floodplains.
How to spot
Look for its overall large size and dark plumage. Distinguish this subspecies by the more extensive black on the face, which can extend above the eye, compared to the Southern Spur-winged Goose. Observe the prominent red knob on the bill and the wing spur.
When to spot
Observable throughout the year. Its movements are often tied to rainfall patterns, congregating in wetlands during dry seasons and dispersing during the wet season.
This subspecies is known for the prominent black facial skin extending to the eyes, giving it a somewhat masked appearance.
